Where do I go to study Chinese?

If you want to study Chinese full time, many major universities have full-time programs for foreign students. Fudan University, South East Normal University, Shanghai Foreign Language University all have extensive programs, and other universities should have some as well. The program at Fudan, The International Cutural Exchange School, is one of the most popular. Getting in is not so hard, you just need to be under 50, hold at least a high scholl diploma, and send in an application form with a $50US application fee. 6511-7628 fax: 6511-7298. Most other schools have similar requirements. If you want to study after hours, Mach Mandarin probably has the best methods and the most flexible schedules available in Shanghai. Details: The Shanghai Foreign Service Corp. even offers courses to foreigners. They generally only offer private lessons, although they do provide group lessons for businesses. Fees per hour for individual classes are 60 yuan/ hour for daytime lessons, 72 yuan/hour for evening and weekend. Tel:63721888-1028

Can a foreigner drive in Shanghai? And where can I get a car?

Absolutely. But to drive here, a foreigner must first pass an examination at the Shanghai Transport Bureau even if he/she has an international drive license. The exam deals with basic traffic rules and the traffic situation of Shanghai. Which seems complicated and wearying enough from the backseat, let alone the front seat. To find a car, try some of the shops along Weihai Lu, which is an automobile sort of street. You'll probably find some second-hand car dealers along that road.

Where can I go swimming in Shanghai?

First try a health club, many of which are in hotels. Discounts are available for membership-card holders and hotel guests. Regal International East Asia Hotel is a good choice, and its health club is cool. Then you can try some local swimming pools frequented by local young people. You may be asked to undertake a physical examination before you splash into the water. The Shanghai Swimming Pool, 1300 Zhongshan Nan Er Lu, 6438-1914, is open on weekends, and the pool at the Shanghai Stadium, 666 Tianyueqiao Lu, 6426-6666, is open daily. Get in the swim!

Quality VCD's??
I like VCD's, but the quality on the street is pretty bad, where can I buy good ones?
John

Dear John
If you buy VCD's on the street it's a gamble. Sometimes they're good, sometimes bad. And although service is right up there with the best that you can find in China, just because you return it for another, doesn't mean you'll get better quality next time. But you can find licensed VCDs in big book stores such as Shanghai Book City on Fuzhou Lu, or at Carrefour. These VCD's are top quality and "bugless" so you don't have to live in fear of missing the end of the film. There is also a music and movie chain called, Maya. They've sprouted up everywhere, although the selection is smaller than the street, and most of the movies are dubbed.

CHINESE FORTUNE TELLING
I hope you may be able to help me. I come across something called the Chinese Fortune sticks Chien Tung and I was fascinated by the little book that comes with it to tell me what each numbered stick symbolise. However it does not say where does the reference come from. I really want to know more about it and a copy of the original Chinese interpretation of the 78 fortune sticks. Please help. Can you ask your fortune telling expert to give me an answer. Thanks.
Melanie

Dear Melanie:
Thanks for your message. This chinese fortune telling technique has many different forms, but ultimately is sourced from the I Ching divination book. Many Chinese temples and fortune tellers have their own variations on the numbers and the predictions. You can say they made them up, or that they received alternative inspiration from the stars. Up to you.

Are you for real or just a JOKE?
I was in Shanghai few weeks ago on a business trip. I found that they were not many places to go to have fun after 10PM. Next time, can we look you up and you can show us around?
Howard

Dear Howard
Please Do.

SHANGHAI TRIP
Hi, We will be in Shanghai the end of October and would like an idea of how many days we should plan on sightseeing and shopping. Can we do day trips (Suzhou, Wuxi, etc) by ourselves if we do not speak Chinese? We spent five days in Beijing last year and wish we had taken more time there. We want to make sure we set aside enough days for Shanghai and environs. What is the weather like the end of October? Can you recommend the most convenient area to pick a hotel? Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
palaces@aol.com

Dear Inquirer
One week in Shanghai would be fine to see enough. You can absolutely make day trips to nearby towns, but it's not so easy if you do not speak Mandarin. You can try it though. When in Shanghai, we recommend you pick one of the hotels not too far from the downtown area due to traffic issue and also this will give you chance to walk along nicer Shanghai streets in the evenings which, by itself, is an attraction. We wish you an enjoyable stay.

SHANGHAI NOW...
Hi, love your site. Shanghai seems to have changed a lot since I was last there is 1990. Would you have an estimate of the size of the expat. population these days. Have people - local or expat - taken to living in Pudong?
Cheers, Mary

Dear Mary
The size of the expat community in Shanghai is estimated somewhere at 30,000 now. Many people are moving to Pudong now that the area boost some of nice housing and it becomes more convenient to commute to and from Puxi than it used to be. See more on Pudong HERE.

BEIJING TRIP
Hello, I am planning to make a trip to Beijing and the Great Wall in the middle of this month, May. I read in some guide books that the air in Beijing is more dusty during the months of April & May. Since we are very keen photographers we would like to ensure that we visit Beijing during the best whether for photography. I would like to know what is the whether like right now in Beijing. Is the air really hazy or dusty? What is the best months to visit in terms of clear & fine whether? I would appreciate if you can give me a speedy response so that we can make the travel arrangements soon. Thank you very much. Regards,
YH Tham

Dear Tham
There's a lot of dust blowing around in the air in April and May. And even worse, the pollution has been awful recently. Five days out of every week, I can barely see half a mile. It's probably a little better out at the wall, but not much. If, however, a rain storm blows through, this is a great time to be in Beijing. If you want to play it safe, however, September and October are usually the best time to visit Beijing. The weather is dry and cooler, and it's usually quite pretty out at the wall as the leaves start turning color. Assuming the pollution lets up.

JOB FOR A FRENCH...

Currently, I'm working in the Direct Marketing Department of a French financial company. Do you know some companies or organisms which help french people to find a job in the huge city ? VISA RENEWALS
Hi! First of all, I have to say this is truely a great site. I would not have expected anything as entertaining for any other city in China except Hong Kong. I will be in Shanghai for three month in the summer. But I will be traveling on a month long tourist visa (with US passport). I would like to know where I can renew my visa in Shanghai. Thank you very much. Regards,
Dan

Dear Dan
It shouldn't be a problem renewing your Visa. Just get to the Immigration Bureau soon before your former visa expires to avoid any confusion. When in Shanghai, go to no.333 Wusong Road. It's about a kilometre north of the water-front Bund (Waitan).

HELP...!
You have an extremely interesting web-page. Keep up the good work, but when I saw the link "nightlife", I was tempted to think of the possibility of having addresses of escort agencies as well. Could you please let me know if there is any on the net, and if yes, how I can find them. Thanks a lot. Yours,
Jayson..

Dear Jayson
We wish we could help you out but Shanghai-ed doesn't know any site with the service you request. Advice: Keep surfing and you might find one. Goodluck.

SHANGHAI IN SEPTEMBER...
Thanks so much - you've been very helpful. Once I find out where I'm going to do my internship in Chinese Medicine (hopefully in Shanghai) I'm sure I'll be in touch again with lots of other questions. While I'm at it - What's the weather like in Shangai during Sept.? Is it very hot and humid or bearable for a Westerner like me? Thanks again!!
Lucy

Dear Lucy
Shanghai is quite hot but not so humid as June to August. We should say that you, like other westerners, can bear it. Just bring a few T-Shirts and you'll enjoy the city.

NORMAL UNIVERSITY
Dear Shanghai-ed, Is the East China Normal University the same as the Shanghai Normal University? Where is the East China Normal University? What's its reputation like? How big is it? I'll be going there in September and I don't know the first thing about it. Help. Thanx.
Steve.

Dear Steve:
East China Normal University IS NOT the same as Shanghai Normal University. They are separate universities. East China Normal Universtiy is located in the west part of town surrounded by beatiful parks. It is about 20 minutes from the airport. It's close to the downtown area as well which wil give you opportunity to visit the most exciting part of the city. The School is quite big with several thousand students and, we believe, foreign students' life is exciting. You can meet anyone from Congo to Laos or Vietnam. It's the leading teacher's training school in East China and one of the key schools in the country.
Wish you enjoyable stay.....

Thanks very much for your help - I'll get in touch with Shanghai University of Traditional Medicine by fax. You gave me the phone number of the Shanghai Second Medical University - is there also a fax that I could get. Thanks again for all your help!!

TAILORS AND ALTERATIONS
I've recently moved to Shanghai and as I have a Shanghainese business partner and friend many of the most basic and complicated questions most Americans face have been answered for me. One thing still illudes me and my partner: where does one go to have simple alterations on quality suits? I've brought a few things with me that need tailoring and my friend recently bought a suit in London that he hasn't worn for 3 months because he can't find someone trustworthy who will do simple alterations. Apparently the custom suit shops and department stores simply will not do work that you bring in for them(as opposed to a garment you've purchased there). Could you provide some direction in this area?

Dear Andy
King Chant Tailors can help you out. Ring Sam at:6270-7668 (business hours: 9:00 - 17:30) or 6481-4120 (house). e-mail: zhangc@online.sh.cn See more information on Shanghai-ed, classifed page.

IMPORTED PIZZA
Hi, Do you know how to order a pizza in USA and send it to Shanghai? If you know, could you tell me about how to do that? Thanks a lot! Jin Cheng, 4/1/98

Dear Cheng
Sorry! You are one day late to ask. It's April 2nd today.

CHOIR
I'm looking for a choir singing fun stuff like gospels, jazz etc.

Dear Questioner
We know about several churches around the city which have gospel choirs. If you are a foreigner try the Intl. Church (Guoji Libai Tang) at Hengshan Road. As for blues, there are a couple of singers singing nightly in clubs. Visit Blues&Jazz (Sinan Rd), Park 97 (Fuxing Park), Cotton Club (Huai Hai Rd) etc. etc.

SHANGHAI STREETS
I just discovered your web page, via the notice board at the Wellcome store (And by the way I never bought vegetable wrapped in styrophome and cyleohane sp? in the states) and think the page is very good. One comment, however, given the difficulty in telling a taxi driver the name of a street just by the spelling, could you provide more details in locating pubs and bars. It is easy when it is a well known street like Yanan or Maoming Lu, but many streets are hard to find. I have the same complaint about my DD's card that only has the pinyin. thanks, take care. Lance.

ps: When was the last time the B-shares page was updated?

Dear Lance
Thanks for the comment, we're working on making better directions and we update B-shares everyday except saturdays and sundays.

YACHTS

WORKING OUT
Hi there! I am an English Teacher; and I will be moving to Shanghai in about a months time.....I have lived in China before (in Beijing for 2 years..); so my main 'concern' with coming to Shanghai is finding an affordable yet decent gym to work out at!! Can you help???
Hoping for some 'advice' soon.... krista :-)

Dear Krista
There are two 'more affordable' gyms we know in Shanghai. One is the health center at the Sheraton Hotel, located by the sports stadium. The other is Dee-Dee's health club, Tel: 6281-5639.

CHINESE
Do you know of a good centralized listing of Chinese (Mandarin/Putonghua) lessons/classes/tutors for foreigners in Shanghai? Either day or night classes, prices, ratings, locations, etc. I know that some universities offer them but they tend to be in the daytime and can be pricey or relatively far from downtown.
On a related note, is there any Chinese-language certification for private tutors? Signed, Chinese-challenged

Hi Chinese Challenged!
There are several options for learning Chinese in Shanghai. One option is hiring a private tutor. You can do this by going to a university, finding a good teaching, and asking them to teach you: all teachers moonlight. There is a good language center run by Fudan University, but located in central Shanghai. They aim at foreigners working in Shanghai, and offer night classes, weekend seminars, and several week intensive programs. You can out more information on them on our chinese study page.
There is a standardized Chinese language test called Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi. It is offered 3 times a year at the major universities including Fudan, East China Normal, and Shanghai Foreign Language University. There are a total of 12 levels.

TAXES
Thanks for a great website! I am considering moving to Shanghai and I wonder how much foreigners pay in taxes when working for foreign companies in China.
Thanks Marcus

Dear Marcus, Here it is:
Individual Income Tax Rates (Table 1)
(applicable to income from wages and salaries)
Range of Monthly Taxable Income = Tax Rate(%)
income of 500 and less = 5%
income above 500 yuan and up to 2000 yuan = 10%
income above 2000 yuan and up to 5000 yuan = 15%
income above 5000 yuan and up to 20000 yuan = 20%
income above 20000 yuan and up to 40000 yuan = 25%
income above 40000 yuan and up to 60000 yuan = 30%
income above 60000 yuan and up to 80000 yuan = 35%
income above 80000 yuan and up to 100000 yuan = 40%
income above 100000 yuan = 45%
Note: Monthly taxable income refers to the balance after a deduction of 800 yuan or other additional expenses from the monthly income.

FRENCH FOOD
i understand that there is a French resturant that has recently opened in Shanghai. All i know is that it is not in a hotel. do you know its name and where it is?

The restaurant you've heard of is probably Le Bouchon, on Wuding Xi Lu, near Jiangsu Lu. The colour scheme is a little stomach turning, but the wines are good and cheap. Et voila, c'est francais! May-May mentioned it recently in her nightlife report.

COST OF LIVING
Being retired and suffering the diminishing buying power of an American pension I am always on the lookout for a place to make my financial savings go further. I have heard that Shanghai is one of these places. Can you give me some idea as to the cost of a one bedroom apartment or large Hotel room, together with their availability, and the price of an average meal that might correspond to a Pork Chop with drink, for instance, or possibly even a Hamburger? This is not to say I don't like Chicken and Rice. I am only trying to determine what it takes to make it month to month in the Shanghai economy in a comfortable fashion. Being 73 years of age I expect it is foolish to assume I would quickly "pickup the language" so it might be prudent to touch on a non-Chinese speaking foreigners ability to cope.
Thank you, Gene.

The issue of housing is a bit complicated here due to government regulations. There are two kinds of housing: foreigner approved housing, including specific apartment buildings and hotels, and local chinese housing. The foreigner approved housing is exorbitantly expensive and lavish. It might be impossible to find a single room apartment, and 2-3 bedroom apartments start at US$800 a month and sky rocket from there. Local chinese housing is much more affordable, and many foreigners are looking into this option to avoid high rents. There is a risk though, as it is still questionable for foreigners to live in local housing, but most foreigners don't have any problems. In the chinese suburbs, very nice 1-2 bedroom apartments are available for US$300-400/month.
At most western restaurants, you can buy a burger and drink for about US$12.

INTERNET ACCESS
Dear Shanghai-ed Editor, How difficult is it to get inter-net access in Shanghai?
Thanks a million! Sean

Dear Sean, It's actually pretty easy to get internet access here in Shanghai. If you have your own computer, and access to a telephone line, you can just hook up. If you don't have a computer, there are several internet cafes that are a bit expensive, but convenient. The most convenient is 3C+T cafe on the corner of Huaihai Zhong Lu and Shan xi nan Lu, right on the subway line.

GOING TO CHINA IN SEPTEMBER:
WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FOREIGN RESIDENTS THINK ABOUT THE DIFFICULTY OF LEARNING SHANGHAI DIALECT. ALSO OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHING, AND CUSTOMS FOR DATING.

Most foreigners find the Shanghai dialect difficult to learn, particularly because most of us are still trying to either learn Mandarin or perfect our Mandarin. I'm sure you know that there are hundreds of dialects in China and, for all practical purposes, Shanghainese is a different language altogether. There are foreigners here who speak it, but they have studied it, rather than just "picked it up."
There are many opportunites for teaching, both in the Chinese Universities, and in private centers, which are much more lucrative. Generally US$15 an hour.
Customs for dating: Can you be more specific? What exactly do you mean?

thanks for the answer. by customs by dating i meant is it possible for westerners to date Chinese women. in the lonely planet guide to China it states that it is very difficult for that to occur -could they be right. cheers

Sure, it's possible for Westerners to date chinese women, and some western women even date chinese men, although it's not as common. The Lonely Planet must be a bit out of date, because in fact, it's possible to see quite a lot of inter-racial and inter-cultural dating here. You may attract some extra-long stares, but nothing more than that. In other parts of China, there may be some risks, mostly for the Chinese half, (loss of face, jealously or disgust from peers, etc.) but Shanghai is modern and cosmopolitan enough that most people don't take much notice.

AMERICAN VEGETABLES
Hi, You have a great web site. I have heard of an (american?) place to buy vegetables could you give me the adress.
Thank you very much in advance. B. Larsen.

Dear Ms. Larson, Well, we that think that "Wellcome" Supermarket is probably about the most "American" place in town. The vegetables are clean and wrapped in styrofoam and cellophane wrap just like we find at home. We haven't heard of any place that actually imports vegetables, (although some fruit is imported), so if you find it, let us know!

COLLEGE STUDENTS
Thanks for all the information about Shanghai. I wonder whether there is a particular hang-out place for college students, especially foreign exchange students in Shanghai.
I appreciate your response. Sean.

Dear Sean, Most of the foreign exchange students in Shanghai are located in the northern part of Shanghai, in an area called Wujiaochang. They're up there because of the major universities: Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, and the University of Science and Technology. Wujiaochang sports several popular bars called the Hit House Pub, and the Tribesman. But the real hopping nightlife is centered around Fudan U, and Zheng Tong Road. Here, you can find any style bar from American to Korean to European. Some of the favorites are Mister Pizza, Hard Rock Bar, and Club Paradise.

THE OPERA HOUSE
Greetings. I have heard that The Shanghai Opera House is going to open in this Summer. The first show will be "Zheng He". Do you know what date they start to open to the public and the performence schedule .
Thanks. Jack Liu, San Francisco.

Dear Jack, The Shanghai Opera House's official opening to the public will be October 1, 1998, although we have heard a rumour that there will be a Japanese production playing sometime in June. Unfortunately, the official schedule still hasn't been released, so we're also still waiting to hear the details.

VISIT SHANGHAI?
Dear shanghai ed i'm 11 years old and my parents are thinking of going to shanghai. But i dont think we will go and i really want to go. I just want to know is their a lot to see in shanghai. But really alot.Because i want show my parents that there is a lot to see in shanghai, so we can go.Could you email me back telling me if there is a lot to see and anything good to see.
yours sincerely, dory

Dear Dory: There's tons of things to see, it depends what you want. We are not very objective on this subject. We love Shanghai. It is a city with a rich past, a frenetic present and a bright future. But it is not for everyone. The air can be polluted, there is not much green space around and it is pretty messy. It does not have a lot of tourist attractions, either -- no big palaces or temples. But the city has a power and vitality which is matched by only a few other cities in the world - New York, Tokyo, Bombay ... not many others. If you have the chance to come and visit for a few days, you would find plenty to do and see. But the most interesting thing is walking around the streets, and enjoying the sense of life here.

SHANGHAINESE LESSONS:
If I was to travel down to Shanghai and wanted to do a weeks intensive study of spoken Shanghaiese, can you tell me if there are any institutions offering such classes? I am a competent Putonghua speaker (native tongue English) and know a certain amount of Shanghaiese already.
Mr Pang

Mr Pang, We know of no schools or institutions that offer formal Shanghainese lessons. Although we understand there is a lady at Fudan University who teaches a Shanghainese course for part of the year. Contact us for contact details. Or else, just come down and start talking and listening. Especially if you already know some Shanghainese. We personally find the taxi drivers to be the best teachers. Sit in the front seat, and say: Sangyi naneng (how's business?) and take it from there.

FRENCH LESSONS:
Is there an official French system Lycee in Shanghai? What are the possibilities for education in French for 7 to 14 year old expatriate children ? Thank you,
Colin Legg

Colin: "L'ecole Francaise de Shanghai" opened on Sept. 4, 1995. It's a private school that adheres to the criteria of the French school system. There's a pre-school, primary, and secondary school and the curriculum is based on the material of CNED (we don't know what that is.) The secondary school has just opened in the 96-97 academic year. The address: New Rainbow Asia Garden A8, Hu Qing Ping Gong Lu No. 1655, Shanghai 201702, China. Tel: (86)(21) 5976-3431. Fax: (86)(21) 5976-3429

COOKING:
I have been looking at recipes from Shanghai and cannot figure out what "gourmet powder". Neither can my wife, whose a Shanghai native. Is there anyone who might have a clue? - Yuhua

Yuhua: in this context, "gourmet poweder" can only mean one thing -- MSG, or in chinese weijing

MAGICIANS:
Do you know of any magicians in Shanghai, that could be hired for a party? (Chinese or Western, doesn't matter). I've heard there's a magicians club here, but have no details.

The first thing to do is go to the Magicians' Restaurant opposite the old Metropole Hotel on Fuzhou Lu. They do magic shows to accompany lunch and dinner.

PETS:
Do you have any details of vets in Shanghai??
Charlotte Freemantle
