Education
When you're not in China, and even if you are, it is sometimes difficult to find the information you are looking for. Digging up the different options of where you can study chinese is pretty difficult when you are hundreds of miles away. This is a list of the major universities in Shanghai. Of course there are literally dozens of others, that probably offer some sort of small Chinese language program. And of course you can work out a course on your own, by hiring your own private tutor. All teachers here moonlight; it's just a matter of finding the best one.

Fudan University

220 Handan Road, 200433 Shanghai
Tel: (8621) 6549-2222
Fax: (8621) 6549-1875
Obviously the biggest, and probably the best university to study at: with nice living conditions, and a several different programs. The biggest drawback is that the campus is located about 40 minutes north of Shanghai. But of course, the students create their own social life in the area.

Mandarin Center, Fudan University

10 Song Yuan Road, 200335 Shanghai
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 6270-7668
Fax: (8621) 6270-7661
This training center seems to be very well organized and accomodates those of us working in Shanghai. They offer a full range of courses: night classes, seminars, summer intensive studies, and many more.

JiaoTong University

1954 Huashan Road, 200030 Shanghai
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 6281-2414
Fax: (8621) 6282-9514
Jiang Zemin's alma mater, this university is well-kept, and well-funded. It's location is ideal, minutes from the booming shopping center of Xujiahui.

Shanghai Conservatory of Music

209 Fenyang Road, 200031 Shanghai
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 6471-9492
Fax: (8621) 6433-0866
Beautifully located in the heart of Old Shanghai, but a little questionable in terms of a school. Private classes only, for 60RMB an hour, with a lot of extra rules and stipulations about how many hours a week you need to study, etc. The major bonus is that they'll let you live anywhere you want. And this luxury may be well-worth any kind of hassle they throw at you.

Shanghai International Studies University

550 Dalian Road West
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 6531-1900, Fax: (8621) 6542-0225
Another in the northern university ghetto.

Shanghai Normal University

10 Guilin Road, 200234 Shanghai
Tel: (8621) 6470-0700
Fax: (8621) 6433-9150.

Shanghai University

149 Yanchang Road, 200072 Shanghai
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 5663-1515
Fax: (8621) 5663-5364
Actually less well-known than the name would lead you to believe, and situated way out west, pretty far from anything.

Tongji University

1239 Siping Road, 200092 Shanghai
Tel: Foreign Affairs Office: (8621) 6598-1057. Another "big name" university, not far from Fudan.
