Handy Hint for Moving
Antique or Not Antique?
Sometimes it's hard to know. The general rule in China is that if it is over 100 years old it may be prohibited from export.
If there is any doubt as to the age of your Chinese furniture, porcelain and/or artwork then an antique inspections should be arranged with the "Shanghai Antique Inspection Bureau". They will come to your house and inspect your treasures. Each item that has passed inspection will receive a small wax seal. They will also charge you a fee for the privilege of visiting your home. The size of the fee may very according to how many items you have but in general they will charge a base fee of RMB 400.00 each seal placed on an item will be an additional charge. Once the inspection is complete they will provide you with a sealed envelope which you should provide to your moving company for Customs clearance.
It should be noted that the Chinese Government takes the export of Chinese Antiques very seriously. Un-inspected antiquities found in a shipment can lead to extensive delays and heavy fines.
