Opened about a year ago, this is probably the most delicious, best designed, friendliest restaurant in Shanghai. Before there was Ginger, I felt so bored with the Shanghai restaurant landscape. The quality of Gingers unique fare is consistently high, Gingers atmosphere is quiet and pleasant, it is a great place to spend an afternoon or an evening. A new comer that offers cheap eats. I tried the sandwiches, their homemade bread is great. Love the one-bite pineapple puff, finally there is something that is not industrial coloring and flavour. The interior is dominated by white, simple and relaxing. I spent only around RMB30 for a meal with drink. Will definitely go again.

 Indian Kitchen (1  comment)

I have been there quite a few times now and I can only say that the service is getting crappier every time. Starters arriving after a the main courses and then only after chasing the waitting staff. So why bother?-well the curries are very good and reasonable value, the portions sizes are good and the prices beat those at the Indian resteraunt in the Ruijin Hotel complex whose name slips my mind but I do remember being charged RMB90 for a lamb dish with only 4 pices of meat in it!

 Planet Shanghai (1  comment)

When we were on our way to Keven's, Planet Shanghai was the resturant we past by before we reached our destination. Though we tried Keven's a few times before and it was great, the urge to try new things hit and we stepped into Planet Shanghai. We stood at the door, waiting for someone to direct us to our table, but saw no one. It wasn't until we had to call for people that a waitress comes out in a hurry and led us. She sat us down and took our order. The food wasn't all that good, and what a surprise, the resturant doesn't supple their customers with free toast! When we asked for it, they told us we had to buy it. When we questioned and stated that there hasn't been a western style resturant we've been to that doesn't give free toasts or bread of some sort (which is true, no?). The waitress told us to wait and came back saying the kitchen will give us the toast for this time and apologized. The food was standable but is nothing compare to Keven's. It was priced unreasonably for such quality of food. If you happen to be near the area, I suggest you try across the street, Keven's Cafe, not only is it priced reasonably with a good value, the food is delicious, AND they actually supple you with home made bread!

I'm surprise to hear so little about this terrific little western restaurant located on Nanjing Xi Lu. My husband and I love the place. It's very clean, the waitresses are always smiling, and the food is wonderful. If you have any questions or need something the owner is usually around to take of us.(I think his name is Tim or maybe tom). Try this place out, it's a real find.

M on the bund (6  comments)

M on the Bund is really bad, I took my time to send in my feed back but never get any response. Probably this is their way of doing business. It is definitely out of my list, and now I would like to share the feed back sent to M with all of you. Think twice before you decide to you, this is my advice. ************** Hi Michelle and Bruno, Shanghai is very hot in this summer and we didn't want to dress up heavily, instead we were in casual wear when we arrived at your restaurant on 25 August 2003 evening. We thought that it would be a nice evening, but it was NOT. First, the waiter at the reception looked at us from head to toe with an unwelcome look. I then spoke in Mandarin that we had made a reservation and we asked if there were window seats, we were told "no", and he further mentioned that the window seats had to be booked one or two weeks earlier. When I made the reservation, I was told that there is no garantee for window seats, and it couldn't be reserved. If I was told earlier that I could get table with nice view, I would have reserved for one earlier. We were then led to a table which has to share seats with other, we asked if there was any better seats, and we were told that seats were available at the other dark corner. No friendly tone, no nice smile and cold; we then decided to leave immediately as we were not welcome at all. Surprise to learn from your website that nice people is one of the selling point! We then decided to go to Grand Hyatt in Pudong and on the way, I called and asked to talk to a manager of your restaurant. Bruno answered it nicely and apologised for that, and made sure that we would have nice time if we asked to meet him on our next visit. Immediately, I felt that if I had to ask to meet a manager so that I could get good service at a restaurant, I would rather not having my meal there, it means that same level of service is not provided by all your staff. Bruno said that I should complain to him when I was in the restaurant, but if you are treated this way, it is normal that you don't want to be there any more, even for one more second! Everything there become the ugliest. Maybe we are not white caucasian, maybe we were in casual, and maybe I did not speak in English, but these are not the reasons that we have to be discriminated and treated unfriendly. We then had our dinner on level 56 at Grand Hyatt in Pudong, the service was excellent and professional, and we had nice view and great food, we spent about RMB1000 there and we were very happy. Well, we live in Hong Kong and initially we thought that we would visit the other M in HK after we tried M on the Bund. NO, after all these, we would definitely not visit your restaurants again. As I think it is very important to let both of you know about our first experience at M on the Bund, I decided to write this long email, but I don't know what you will think, maybe this type of email will be classified as "unwelcome" too. Anyway this is a very realistic business world, just a reminder.

milan_pp@lycos.com (2004-08-05)

M on the Bund (Joke on the Bund) High priced, bad service, Manager with bad attitude, food is a joke yet people still go there! I guess FACE is more important then taste! People go there to show off, definately not for the food!

Michel (2002-10-03)

Had lunch here a couple of days ago and completed another 'to do in Shanghai'. The set menu was grat value by any western style restaurant in China. 2 courses 88rmb, 3 courses 98rmb. Food really tasty. From other reviewers it seems that people expect too much from this place and hance are disappointed. Go neutral minded (or have someone else pay). Views are phenomenal. Will be going back soon.

Oliver Austin (2002-08-30)

Please just forget this place. Waste of time and money. Heard so much about the place but was very disappointed. If you want a night view of the bund, go to the top floor of Peace Hotel instead which is free. The service was horrible, my chair was bumped a total of 5 times the whole evening without any word from the waiter. Went with my kids and they do not have anything for children and I am not talking kiddie meal here. Food was definitely bad. The worst restaurant in Shanghai we tried.

Warren Tan (2002-06-24)

I must say my one and only experience at M on the Bund had been somewhat disappointing. No complaints about the view and the ambience...but the food was at best average...and the service gets a big thumbs down. Absolutely the worst table waiting skills I've seen - including slapping the menue on a guest's face without even noticing...guess I won't be heading back any time soon.

S. Jin (2002-01-07)

M on the Bund, run by Michelle Garnaut, which in no time flat has established itself as a globally important restaurant, thanks to location, atmosphere, service, and that certain je ne sais qua that all top restaurants have. It's better not to look at the view rather than the prices. Located on the roof of one of the old trading houses lining the river, M features - and seems to own - the Bund, the Huangpu River, and the surreal facade of Pudong on the other bank. International standard winelist, great desserts, and a sense of being somewhere special.

 Number Five (1  comment)

Thank goodness, someone finally opened a real bar/cafe on the bund without the pretense and pricing of the neighbourhood. This place is great, real drinks and food at reasonable prices. A full range of drinks, happy hours, simple but well done cafe/bar food, pool, darts, sofa's, TV, and even wireless lan. Located in the basement of 5 the bund (upstairs is M-on-the-bund) there is a surprising amount of light from the street level windows. The place is comfortable and pretty big and I hear they can throw a great party. Definitely worth checking out for lunch, after work or late night!

 La Seine (1  comment)

Looking for French food at Shanghainese price? Look no further. La Seine deserves the 'That's Shanghai magazine award' for the best French cuisine at the best value. Set dinners start at RMB98 for a 3 course. Great food. Nice to bring a date...enjoy a candlelight dinner. (Somerset Grand, 8 Jinan Road)

Banana Leaf Curry House, Raffles Place (1  comment)

Full during peak hours. Don't really know what's attracting the crowd. The food is ok but the service is horrendous. One time, there was no rice. Another occasion, there was oil floating on the 'teh tarik'. Another, it took 20 mins for the bill to arrive when there was only us at the restaurant. Worst of all, on 3 occasions, our last dish arrived way after we finished our meal. Judge for yourself...

The best siau long bao in Shanghai. No need to queue at YuYuan gardens for an hour. Everything is nice at this place. Large crowds during weekends. Expensive though. (Shui Cheng Road)

Calling all Singaporeans out there...the closest 'Boon Tong Kee' chicken rice found in Shanghai. Cheap. Lots of desserts too. Most convenient when shopping at XiangYang. Just pop over behind, grab a quick bite & continue shopping. 65, XiangYang Road

 People 7, 805 Julu Lu (1  comment)

If you're not observant, you'll never be able to find this place. (hint...look on the floor) A novelty restaurant where a code is required to enter the restaurant. (remember to book or else you can't get in) Fun & impressive for first timers or tourists. Nice fusion food at decent prices. However, after the 2nd or 3rd visit, there's nothing new to order; small menu. Not recommended for lunch as the restaurant looks too raw with the all over cement feel. Check out the toilets....classic!

 Fong's Vietnamese (1  comment)

Located at Lippo Plaza Huaihua road, the best set lunch menus from Mon-Fri. Reasonably priced for the amount of food served. Not worth to order a la carte at dinner as you can eat the same thing during lunch (from the set menu) for almost half the price. Nice environment.

 Lanteen (1  comment)

Located right in Fuxing Park(next to Partyworld), this Japanese fushion restaurant is not to be missed! It has some very unique and flavoursome dishes. And for fondue lovers, their chili prawn fondue pot is a must!! Never seen anything like that before. They also offer a great variety of drinks, and "Lanteen" is definitely something girls would love. And don't forget their "sour"s too! To all party goers out there, this is the deal place to drop by before Park 97 and Guandi!

 TACO BELLE (1  comment)

Just forget it. Overpriced, lousy service and the food only faintly resembles anything mexican. The costumes worn by staff and their attempts to speak in mexican are off-putting too. They would be better off just trying to write down the order correctly. The tiny, unpretentious Taco Popo has much better food at great prices.

FINALLY a place in Shanghai to enjoy some decent hot pot without the crowds, the heat, the smoke, the stuffiness and the noise! COCA brings new life and elegance into the popular hotpot dining culture here. Check out the really cool induction panels which are level with the table surface - unsightly stoves are nowhere to be seen!

Taishoroman Haikara Japanese Restaurant (1  comment)

For those who love Japanese Cuisine, I highly recommend you not to ever visit: Taishoroman Haikaraya Japanese restaurant 85 Huating Lu (near Huaihai Lu) 禄陋脥陇脗路85潞脜(陆眉禄麓潞拢脗路 Service and Management SUCKS Big Time! Taishoroman Haikaraya Japanese restaurant offers all-you-can-eat buffet priced at RMB 98 with soft drinks (Option 1) and RMB 138 (Option 2) with alcoholic beverages. Scenario: We were a group of four, only one of us prefer to take the buffet that comes with alcoholic beverages whereas the other 3 opted for the one that comes with soft drinks only for obvious reason (all 3 are non-drinkers). It doesn隆炉t seem to pose a problem on the surface but it gets complicated when we placed our orders. Problem: Our server told us we could only stick to one option or the other; i.e. order 4 X option 1 and have our alcoholic beverages order separately or we have to settle for 4 X option 2, no other ways, both waitress we approached including its manager stated 隆掳its our policy.隆卤 Of course, it is not written anywhere in the menu 篓C just a very typical pathetic response when a restaurant doesn隆炉t want to honor a request. What隆炉s Worst: When ask for a manager, another waitress came by instead to explain that she cannot honor our request. When asked again, she responded that the manager was off for the night. Of course one of us actually spotted the manager when we came in to the restaurant earlier on at the reception area, so we countered-challenge the waitress who then responded 隆掳 Oh! I will get him here if you would wait for a minute隆卤 but ensuring us that it would not make a difference. Well, she was definitely right about this one! When we related our problem to the manager Mr. Shi, the matter escalated. Not only did he not want to honor our request, he repeatedly dish out that silly excuse that it is their policy. Of course he did not have a good reason to offer us so he simply brushed if off by saying if he honored our request that he will have to do the same for the rest. 隆掳For those of you who has visited this restaurant, you will know that they have only individual room (no common area for dining) thus making his lame excuse completely invalid.隆卤 When we told him that if he insists we would choose to leave, he shrugged his shoulder and exclaimed, 隆掳sorry, there is nothing I can do about it.隆卤 I can only tell you one thing, if Mr. Shi would have been working elsewhere in the world, I am fairly sure he will lose his job on the spot.

I am new to Shanghai and was walking through over-priced Xin Tian Di when I stumbled across a restaurant I had never heard of right behin Xin Tian Di. Relaxing and refreshing. The food was excellent and cheap! The waiters were attentive. I took their menu home and am looking forward to some home delivery as well. I can't belive I have never heard of this place! Their slogan is low oil and low salt, so not only is it good it's healthy!

 Melrose Pizza (1  comment)

Convenient to order...the operators speak English pretty well. The pizza isn't the best in China but it'll do. Prices are tolerable and the large size (15", unusual in China) lets you feed a few people for a reasonable cost. My real beef with them is their delivery. The time before last took an hour and a half; my order last night took an hour fifty. If you want to eat the same night you place your order, call somewhere else. I plan to.

A huge, sumptuously decorated restaurant with prices incredibly reasonable for such gorgeous surroundings, Spice Market subscribes to the belief that "more is better" in terms of both serving sizes and service. Except for a few minor disappointments, the food is fantastic and lives up to the restaurant's name, so don't say you want the dishes hot unless you really, really mean it. Spice Market also serves Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine, with plans to add Singaporean dishes in the near future. It's located at 8 Jinan Lu, but the entrance is on Chongde Lu.

Park 97, operated by the California Group from Hong Kong. The location in Fuxing Park is unique and the food in both the Japanese and Italian restaurants (Tokio Joe's and Baci) is excellent. The pizza, in my almost completely objective opinion, is the best in Shanghai. But Park 97 really sparkles later in the evening in the California Club annex, newly expanded to handle the crowds. This is the coolest place in Shanghai, and the place to go to watch the see-and-be-seen crowd in their element. Park 97, 2 Gaolan Lu, Fuxing Park, 6318-0785.

 Brasil Steak House (3  comments)

I thought this is the best value for money restaurant in Shanghai. The meat is delicious, especially the roast beef and it comes to the table faster than you can eat it! This can get a tad annoying when you're full and you keep having to turn the waiters away but if you love food then this is the place to go.

James Shearman (2002-10-23)

This place smelled like a toilet. The meats tasted as if preserved in formaldehyde. To make already dire matters worse, the service is confused and inept, leaving capped beer bottles on the table. For RMB66/person, you would be better off visiting any other restaurant in the area. If you do have the misfortune of eating here, I recommend immediate prophylactic alcohol consumption to ward off food poisoning.

Spooty (2002-05-05)

The biggest, baddest Brasilian barbecue buffet in town. Unbelievably delicious meat is constantly brought to your table by the friendly staff. Let gluttony be your guiding light. There is also a fruit and veggie buffet, but who wants to take up space that deserves to be filled with precious meat? There are several in town including one in Jing An Park and another across from the library. Arterial sclerosis be damned!

Located near the Portman at 1528 Nanjing Xi Lu, Always is perhaps best known for its 20 RMB lunch special. Every day from 11:30 to 5 in the afternoon you can enjoy any of a huge variety of Western, Chinese, or Southeast Asian dishes for a paltry 20 kuai. As if that weren't a good enough deal, the special also includes unlimited coffee or iced tea. An unfortunate side effect of such a deal is that Always is almost always bursting at the seams with a loyal clientele of foreigners and locals, which can occasionally lead to your table being temporarily forgotten. The head chef is Indonesian, so the Southeast Asian dishes are perhaps more authentic than the others, but there are many tasty Western and Chinese options. Try the quesadillas if yr jonesing for Mexican cuisine, they are the guppies' gonads. Another bonus is outdoor seating on the first floor patio which facilitates leering at passersby. Also, it may be one of the best restaurants to go to when you have a wicked hangover.

All the dishes were cooked with tea, so they were less greasy than the normal Chinese fare. One of the more impressive dishes was the 'thick chicken breast soup with Biluochun tea flavor'. Chicken soup was never so beautiful. It came out green and yellow in the yin yang sign. The waitress even recreated a mini of the yin yang sign in our bowls when she served us.

 Irene's Thai Restaurant (1  comment)

Shanghai currently has several excellent Thai restaurants, but Irene's was the first. Unfortunately, the Pad Thai should be avoided, but everything else is delicious. Irene's has succeeded in creating a beautiful, "authentic" atmosphere out of a drab building, and patrons can recline on luxurious day beds while dining. Servers are actually from Thailand and they perform traditional Thai dances nightly. 263 Tongren Lu.

 People (Ren Jian) (2  comments)

I concur with the other reviewer in terms of the cool atmosphere, but must disagree with him on the food. While the service is abyssmal at best, the grilled salmon and fried frogs legs were fantastic as are quite a few of the items on the menu. Prices are quite reasonable considering the hip atmosphere and good food. You just have to know what to order.

Slick Rick (2002-03-05)

To get into this place, you have to swipe your hand through a metal cube to make the space age door slide silently back. I heard about this gimmick a while back, and it sounded like that with an entrance like that, the place itself would have to be a let down. And it was. Not the building though - that's as good as the front door (if you like that kind of thing), chrome, candles, minimalism, three stories of glass sided balconies looking down onto the bar, rows of candles. The music and the lighting are just right, the whole thing makes you feel like your in a hip and happening place, but you've still got privacy - it would be good for a couple or a group. Well, it would be good if the service wasn't abysmal and the food over-priced mediocrity on a plate. Still, top place to go and sit around in, but maybe just for drinks. Its at 150 Yueyang lu, by the Yongjia lu intersection.

 Quanjude (1  comment)

The elevator up to Quanjude from its entrance at 786 Huaihai Zhong Lu shows former U.S. president George Bush at a Quanjude branch in Texas. After a few bites of the establishment's signature Beijing roast duck, you may wonder if the chain actually started in Texas, considering how wrong they've got it. Beijing kaoya (roast duck) is deservedly one of China's most famous dishes, and when prepared properly the meat is tender and the duck skin is light, crispy yet with some juiciness remaining, and bears an uncanny resemblance to candy. Quanjude does not subscribe to this preparation style. Instead, the meat is a bit on the dry and tough side, the flavor is extra "ducky", and the skin is dry and rubbery. I wonder if Quanjude's secret is first frying the bird the day before and then microwaving it when the customer orders. As if that weren't enough, the price of a duck is about twice as much as in Beijing. The other dishes are the epitome of northern cuisine run amok--oily as hell and devoid of flavor. Even the cucumbers in vinegar were crap.

 Kaveen's Kitchen (1  comment)

Kaveen's is one of several Indian restaurants in the city that serve up delicious dishes from the subcontinent, and while the food is truly excellent, it is the service and atmosphere that set it apart. To enter Kaveen's one must pass through Old Manhattan Bar and take the stairs up to the second floor where a warm and almost narcotic atmosphere await. Vic, the owner and proprietor of Kaveen's (named after his son) personally oversees operations every night, ensuring the same quality of service each visit. As for the food--everything is delicious from the samosas to the breads to the tandoori and curry dishes. The Indian chai and lassis (fruit and yogurt shakes) can make one forget that alcohol exists. For a unique treat, ask for a shot of vodka in your lassi. Who'd have thought that dairy products and vodka would complement each other so well? What could be better with your after-dinner drink than some of Vic's desserts? Nothing, really. The cookie bars are delicious, but it is his homemade ice cream that will make you wonder if the orgasm you are having is apparent to those around you. Most dishes are around 35-50 RMB, so it isn't difficult to drop a bit of money on a date, but with a 78 RMB buffet on Thursdays, you can eat yourself into oblivion for a reasonable price. Great music, perfect lighting and attentive but non-intrusive service make Kaveen's ideal for a first date.

 Shu Di (1  comment)

Shu Di is one of the best places if not the best in the city for Sichuanese, Hunanese, and Hebei(ese?) cuisine. It is just east of the intersection of Anfu Lu and Wulumuqi Lu. The Lazi Ji (spicy pepper chicken) is fantastic, although occasionally skimpy on the chicken (but never the peppers). The spicy chicken wings, served on a skewer, are incredible in both flavor and how much meat you get. The Ma La Doufu (numb and spicy tofu) is a two-pronged attack on the senses featuring copious amounts of spicy cayenne peppers as well as huajiao (little peppercorns that make your lower face go numb with an inconceivably enjoyable dishsoap aftertaste). Virtually everything is spicy as all hell and capable of sending the eater into a sweaty trance in which he/she attains total and complete consciousness for at least a few minutes. If you really like to punish your tongue, wash those peppers down with some beer.

Long Won Northeast Dumpling (1  comment)

An unassuming little jiaozi shop at Jianguo Xilu and Yue Yang Lu, Long Won is a gem that surprisingly few non-locals have discovered. Every day there is a different selection of jiaozi to choose from (but usually all the old favourites, pork and chinese lettuce, beef and carrot, sanxian etc). All the jiaozi are ready in two shakes of a lamb's tail and all of them are gorgeous. Long Won is more than a dumpling restaurant--it also features some of the best northern-style chaocai (wok dishes) in the city. My personal favorite is disanxian ("three earthen delicacies")--potato, aubergine, and spicy green pepper covered with a heavenly brown sauce. I have had this dish in many restaurants in Beijing, and this is far and away the best version I have encountered. The other chaocai I have tasted are all delicious too. As for drawbacks, there are few. Seating is very limited, so customers are occasionally forced to consider takeout. But there is NO TEA!!! A Chinese restaurant without tea seems to go against the laws of Nature, does it not? If you want something to drink you can choose warm soda or cold beer. There are also several kinds of soup, but they are hit-or-miss. The major drawback of Long Won is that it is slated for demolition along with the beautiful residential area behind it in a few months. Hopefully you will make it to this inexpensive (10-20 rmb per head) treasure trove of northern delights before it is sacrificed upon the altar of progress.

 Ooedo Japanese Restaurant (1  comment)

Japanese restaurants in Shanghai, god bless them, have been engaging in a vigorous price war over the past couple of years, offering all you can eat and drink (and drink!) for 200 rmb, or 150 rmb or whatever. One of the best is Ooedo on Donghu Lu. It lacks a teppan grill, but its sashimi is great, and the bustling feel to it is invigorating.

 Tandoor Indian Restaurant (1  comment)

Indian food in modern Shanghai started with Tandoor, which is rumoured to have received from the former mayor Zhu Rongji a five-year monopoly on Indian food in the city. True or not, it was 1999 before a second Indian restaurant opened. Tandoor is good, and the d'or is other-worldly, but it's pricey for what you get. 59 Maoming Nan Lu, 6472-5494.
